“INSTEAD OF BUILDING A HOTEL, IT’S BETTER TO CREATE A REGENERATIVE PARK”: JORDI VAN OOSTENRYCK IN EL DÍA OF TENERIFE
The Canary Islands newspaper El Día recently published an interview with Jordi Van Oostenryck,, Director of communications at Underwater Gardens International, in which he reflects on the role of marine regeneration as a real and necessary alternative to the current development model along coastal areas.
“Instead of building a hotel, it’s better to create a regenerative park,” says Jordi, summarising UGI’s approach: transforming degraded spaces into living infrastructures that restore biodiversity, generate ecological value and reconnect people with nature. In contrast to conventional tourism and extractive coastal dynamics, the organisation proposes a new paradigm that places environmental regeneration at the heart of territorial planning.
Throughout the conversation, Jordi explains that underwater gardens are not only tools for restoring the seabed, but also catalysts for knowledge, citizen engagement and a new kind of blue economy that creates lasting value. He also highlights the essential role of applied science, ecosystem design and collaboration between institutions, businesses and civil society in making this systemic shift possible.
At Underwater Gardens International, this interview reinforces a message that lies at the core of our mission: it’s time to rethink our relationship with the ocean — to move from extracting resources to giving life back — and to show that regeneration is a strategic opportunity for the Canary Islands and for all coastal territories on our blue planet.

ARTICLE BY CLARA GARCÍA: “WOMEN IN MARINE SCIENCE: LEGACY AND FUTURE”
To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, our colleague Clara García, marine biologist at Underwater Gardens International, authored a thoughtful article on Anna Conte’s blog, dedicado al papel histórico y presente de las mujeres en las ciencias del mar.
Drawing on the legacy of pioneers such as Sylvia Earle, Clara reflects on a path shaped by curiosity, perseverance, and the courage to break into spaces that, for a long time, were not ready to acknowledge female talent. As she notes in the article, “many of the opportunities we have today exist because others dared to step into spaces where they weren’t expected.”
Through inspiring figures like Puri Canals —a global leader in ocean conservation and a constant source of inspiration for UGI— and Olivia Mandle —a young activist bringing marine science to new audiences— Clara emphasises that protecting the ocean is not just about science. It is also about sensitivity, education, and collective commitment.
«One of the places where science must engage in dialogue with citizens” is a central idea of the piece, advocating for an applied and transformative model of research that leads to real action to protect our seas.
At Underwater Gardens International, we proudly support this message: building a regenerative future for our oceans also means recognising and amplifying the voices of the women making it possible today.

FORBES SPAIN RECOGNIZES THE UNDERWATER GARDENS INTERNATIONAL PROJECT IN ITS “THE 50 DREAMS LIST”
Forbes Spain has included Underwater Gardens International (UGI) in its “The 50 Dreams List and the Man Behind It”, a selection that highlights projects with transformative impact and the people driving them forward. From UGI’s perspective, this recognition reflects the collective work behind the project and the shared journey with collaborators, institutions, and scientific teams.
For UGI, this “dream” translates into a very concrete goal: to regenerate marine ecosystems, apply biotechnology to restore life where it has been lost, and demonstrate that regenerative parks can help transform territories in a positive way, leaving them in better condition than they were found.
Rather than being seen as a milestone reached, this recognition is understood as a reminder of responsibility. When it comes to the ocean — and its accelerated degradation — there is no room for complacency. Regeneration requires science, rigor, strong alliances, and projects that can be measured, audited, and scaled, capable of delivering real and lasting impact.
For UGI, this acknowledgement reinforces the commitment to continue working so that the idea of “Gardeners of the Sea” is not just a metaphor, but a tangible way to care for the ocean and generate environmental, social, and economic value for coastal communities.

REEFS CREATED IN BARCELONA ARE REGENERATING ARCTIC WATERS
Thirty artificial reefs developed by Underwater Gardens International (UGI) in Barcelona have begun to bring new life to the Porsanger Fjord in northern Norway. These structures, known as Elnida-rif®, are part of the European project OCEAN CITIZEN, co-funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe programme, and mark a milestone in the application of marine regeneration to Arctic ecosystems.
Developed in collaboration with Norway’s Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the reefs address two of the region’s main ecological challenges: providing safe shelter for juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and promoting the recovery of kelp forests—vital habitats for biodiversity and natural carbon sequestration.
Made from eco-compatible materials coated with calcareous substrate and organic additives, the Elnida-rif® are designed to encourage biological colonisation from day one. Their three-dimensional geometry mimics the natural complexity of marine environments, creating microhabitats and expanding the surface available for algae and invertebrate growth. Installed following an organic constellation-shaped pattern, they enhance biological connectivity between microhabitats and strengthen the resilience of the ecosystem.
The operation was carried out at the end of summer, coinciding with the kelp reproductive phase, when spores are released into the sea in search of new surfaces to settle on. This strategic timing maximises the likelihood of regeneration and the formation of new underwater forests in the following spring.
The Porsanger Fjord has thus become a living laboratory of blue innovation, where scientists from IMR and the OCEAN CITIZEN consortium are monitoring colonisation processes, biodiversity changes, and habitat evolution. The project aims not only to restore ecological balance but also to demonstrate the potential of marine restoration as a driver of Europe’s blue economy, creating knowledge, qualified employment, and measurable environmental benefits.
In the face of the accelerated warming of the Arctic and the loss of essential habitats, these nature-based solutions offer hope and tangible results: they restore shelters, support sustainable fisheries, foster ecotourism, and strengthen coastal resilience.

MARINE CONSERVATION AND REGENERATION: TWO SIDES OF THE SAME CHALLENGE
As part of SeaWilding 2025: The Future of Our Ocean, held in Barcelona, Puri Canals, marine biologist and Director of Institutional Relations at Underwater Gardens International (UGI), took part in a key debate on the future of our seas: is conservation enough, or must we move toward the active restoration of marine ecosystems?
During her intervention, Canals highlighted that in the Mediterranean, only 18% of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) currently have an implemented management plan. “Protecting the ocean is not about drawing boundaries on a map, but about actively managing and regenerating ecosystems,” she noted.
The session underscored the need to combine conservation and regeneration, structured around three priority action areas: Shared and multilevel governance, promoting adaptive, participatory management models and stronger networks of MPA managers; Applied science and innovation, advancing evidence-based regeneration strategies supported by ongoing research and monitoring; and, sustainable financial models, ensuring long-term continuity of both governance and restoration efforts.
As emphasized by UGI, effective marine protection is only achieved when MPAs are genuinely managed, restored, and governed, integrating scientific knowledge, cross-sector collaboration, and political commitment.

STORMS ON LAND, SHIFTS BENEATH THE SEA: UNDERSTANDING THE HIDDEN IMPACT OF DANAS
In recent weeks, many regions have faced the harsh consequences of severe weather events. Yet what happens on land doesn’t stop at the coastline. Episodes like the DANA — isolated high-altitude depressions that unleash intense rainfall — also have a significant impact beneath the sea, triggering sudden changes that can alter the health of marine ecosystems.
In an interview with La Gaceta de Almería, marine biologist Clara García Castilla from Underwater Gardens International (UGI) explains how these phenomena can accelerate degradation in coastal waters and, more importantly, how we can anticipate and mitigate their effects.
When a DANA strikes, large volumes of freshwater enter the sea in a short period of time, causing a sudden drop in salinity. This creates osmotic stress for marine organisms that are adapted to saltwater environments. At the same time, runoff carries sediments that increase turbidity, reducing the sunlight that underwater plants need for photosynthesis.
Excessive nutrient input adds another layer of pressure. It can trigger algal blooms that deplete oxygen and lead to hypoxia — conditions that suffocate marine life. The combined effect of these changes leaves Posidonia seagrass meadows, rocky seabeds, and natural reefs more vulnerable precisely when they are needed most to stabilize the coastal ecosystem and buffer the energy of storm waves.
The article highlights marine regeneration as a practical and science-driven approach to resilience. By installing engineered habitats and modular reefs, coastal areas can absorb wave energy, create refuge for marine species, and accelerate recolonization after storms.
Once again, UGI emphasizes the need to look beneath the surface: understanding that climate resilience starts with healthy seas, and that what we restore underwater strengthens the communities that depend on them above.

REGENERATING THE ARCTIC: INSTALLATION OF ELNIDA-RIF® REEFS IN PORSANGER (NORWAY)
Located within the Arctic Circle, the Porsanger Fjord in Norway reflects the challenges facing our seas: the reduction of kelp forests has diminished the natural shelters of juvenile Atlantic cod, a species that is key to both ecological balance and local fishing. Aware of this urgency, on August 29, Underwater Gardens International (UGI), in collaboration with the Institute for Marine Research (IMR) and as part of the European OCEAN CITIZEN project, installed 30 Elnida-rif® regenerative reefs designed to accelerate the recovery of the ecosystem.
The structures, arranged in a constellation pattern, recreate the natural complexity that marine life needs to thrive, multiplying the available shelters and promoting biological connectivity. The timing of the installation was key: at the end of summer, coinciding with the release of kelp spores, which increases the chances of ecological success in the medium and long term. Science, biotechnology, and strategic planning thus came together to maximize the positive impact of the intervention.
The expected benefits are manifold: increased survival of juvenile cod, recovery of kelp forests and their carbon capture capacity, increased associated biodiversity, and the creation of a model that can be replicated in other marine ecosystems. More than just an installation, this project turns the Porsangerfjord into a living laboratory of blue innovation, where it will be possible to study closely how life returns and how marine regeneration can be accelerated through solutions based on scientific knowledge.
At Underwater Gardens International, we work as true “sea gardeners», convinced that regeneration is not a utopia, but a possible reality when science, biotechnology, and innovation come together with international collaboration.

BEYOND GREENWASHING: THE OCEAN AS A DRIVER OF SUSTAINABLE REGENERATION
For years, sustainability has been the buzzword in corporate and institutional campaigns, appearing in reports, advertisements, and communication strategies. However, its indiscriminate use has created a fundamental problem: the disconnect between what is promised and what actually happens.
Increasingly, consumers are looking for consistency, verifiable results, and real impact. When this is not achieved, there is a sense of greenwashing, where sustainability becomes an empty marketing tool rather than a transformative strategy. On a planet in climate crisis, it is not enough to slow down the damage: we need to regenerate what has already been lost.
The ocean, the silent engine of life on Earth, produces more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs enormous amounts of CO₂, and regulates the global climate. Despite its vital importance, for decades it has been relegated to the bottom of environmental agendas. Recovering habitats, restoring species, and returning natural and social value is not an option, but an urgent necessity to ensure a resilient future.
Regeneration is already happening in different parts of the world thanks to science, innovation, and collaboration. Examples such as the projects promoted by Underwater Gardens International (UGI) demonstrate that it is possible to reverse the degradation of marine ecosystems and bring life back where it once seemed lost. These initiatives, based on scientific research and applied biotechnology, generate immediate ecological benefits while also bringing social and economic value to coastal communities.
In the transition to a truly regenerative model, ocean restoration takes on a central role. It is not only about mitigating climate change, but also about protecting biodiversity, strengthening coastal resilience, and ensuring the well-being of future generations. Each regenerated marine habitat contributes to carbon absorption, risk mitigation, and sustaining local economies, opening up new opportunities within the blue economy.
Underwater Gardens International, founded in Barcelona in 2016, is working to turn this vision from theory into measurable reality. With solutions that integrate science, biotechnology, and ecological design, the organization is committed to marine restoration projects capable of transforming ecosystems and demonstrating that regeneration is not a utopia, but a tangible opportunity to build a more just, resilient, and biodiverse future.

INSTALLATION OF ELNIDA-RIF REEFS IN THE ARCTIC: SCIENCE AND REGENERATION FROM NORWAY
On August 29, Underwater Gardens International (UGI) took part in the installation of 30 Elnida-rif® reefs in the Porsanger fjord, within the Arctic Circle. The intervention was carried out together with the Institute for Marine Research (IMR) in Norway, under the umbrella of the European consortium OCEAN CITIZEN, with the goal of accelerating the ecological recovery of the Arctic.
The Elnida-rif® reefs, designed in Barcelona by UGI based on IMR’s scientific knowledge, are eco-compatible structures conceived to integrate into the ecosystem from day one. Their three-dimensional design provides safe shelters for juvenile cod (Gadus morhua), a species crucial for both ecological balance and the local economy, while also offering ideal surfaces for the attachment and growth of kelp (Laminaria spp.), an essential habitat for marine biodiversity and a highly effective natural carbon sink.
The reefs were deployed in an interconnected constellation pattern, which multiplies available colonization surfaces and strengthens biological connectivity. The installation was also timed strategically: the end of summer marks the release of kelp spores, increasing the likelihood of successful attachment and ecological impact in the medium and long term.
With this initiative, Porsanger becomes a living laboratory of blue innovation, where the benefits of active regeneration will be studied in real time: from boosting biodiversity to creating a replicable model for other marine environments across Europe and beyond.
This milestone highlights the importance of international collaboration between science, innovation, and local commitment. UGI especially acknowledges the contribution of IMR and the partners of the OCEAN CITIZEN consortium, whose joint efforts demonstrate that marine regeneration is possible when scientific knowledge and global vision come together.

REGENERATING TO TRANSFORM: A NEW MARINE ECOSYSTEM AT BARCELONA’S PORT OLÍMPIC
The restoration of the seabed in front of Barcelona’s Port Olímpic is now a tangible example of how science, biotechnology and institutional collaboration can transform a degraded environment into a vibrant and resilient ecosystem — in just twelve months.
Since spring 2024, Underwater Gardens International has deployed 50 artificial reef structures designed according to the principles of active ecological regeneration. These modules, known as Smart Enhanced Reefs (SER®), are made from eco-compatible materials and developed using reefhopper®, our proprietary software that adapts each design to the real conditions of the marine environment, integrating scientific data, geomorphology and local biodiversity.
The result: more than 100 native species have recolonised the area — including crustaceans, mollusks, reef fish, sea bream, octopuses and even rays. Just ten metres deep, a once-depleted seabed has regained ecological vitality. Recent monitoring studies, led by the Barcelona Zoo Foundation, have identified more than 200 species, confirming the regenerative potential of the model.
This pioneering project has been made possible thanks to the initiative of the Barcelona City Council and BSM, and the joint efforts of scientific institutions such as ICM-CSIC, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), who are leading the ecological and acoustic monitoring of the restored ecosystem.
A story of real transformation that has caught the attention of national media such as Antena 3 Noticias, which recently featured the project as a clear example of measurable and scalable marine regeneration.
Port Olímpic has not only been restored — it has become a living laboratory for blue innovation, proving that marine regeneration is not a utopian ideal, but an urgent necessity — and a real opportunity — to build a more resilient, equitable and biodiverse future.

UNDERWATER GARDENS INTERNATIONAL IS PROUD TO BE PART OF A PIONEERING MARINE REGENERATION INITIATIVE AT PORT OLÍMPIC, BARCELONA
This collaborative project seeks to restore and enrich the seabed ecosystem through the installation of artificial reefs and biotopes that create vital habitats for marine fauna and flora.
A year of remarkable recovery
Since spring 2024, 50 artificial reef structures — known as biotopes or bioregeneration reefs — have been installed in the waters adjacent to the Port Olímpic breakwater. In just one year, these structures have become fully colonised, now hosting more than 100 native species, including molluscs, crustaceans, sponges, wrasse, blennies and sea breams.
Scientific monitoring and field observations even indicate higher figures: between 130 and 200 different species have been identified, among them octopus, torpedo rays, damselfish, gilthead bream and striped sea bream. At barely ten metres deep, what was once a depleted seabed has been transformed into a vibrant and diverse ecosystem.
The importance of the project
A key aspect of the initiative is the active involvement of the Barcelona Zoo Foundation, which coordinates scientific monitoring together with the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Thanks to this joint effort, detailed studies on biodiversity, seabed regeneration, water quality and marine acoustics are being carried out to assess the true impact of regeneration.
A gradual process of restoration
This current success is the result of several earlier stages. In summer 2021, 2,000 concrete blocks were placed to reinforce the breakwater, around 300 of which were “naturalised” to facilitate marine colonisation. litar la colonización marina.
In 2023, 100 biotopes measuring approximately one metre high and two metres wide each were submerged, grouped into six clusters covering an area of 1,300 m². Their cavities provide ideal shelter for soft corals, octopus and lobsters.
In May 2024, a pilot scheme was launched with 20 biohuts — cages filled with shells — placed along the breakwater and the Marina wharf, serving as both shelter and feeding areas for juvenile fish.
The role of Underwater Gardens International
At Underwater Gardens International, we drive forward Smart Enhanced Reefs (SER®) and marine habitats designed with technology and data to maximise ecological impact. While local institutions deploy infrastructures such as artificial reefs and biohuts, our solutions complement these efforts through adaptive designs, sensors and sustainable materials that foster long-term biodiversity.
Looking ahead
Scientific monitoring will continue to evaluate biodiversity growth, seabed regeneration, water quality and acoustic conditions. UGI’s technologies and designs offer further potential to strengthen such initiatives in Barcelona and in other urban ports. The success achieved in such a short time demonstrates that it is possible to restore the health of our seas by combining innovation, science and institutional collaboration.

UNDERWATER GARDENS: THE IMPORTANCE OF MARINE MICROORGANISMS IN ECOSYSTEM REGENERATION
At Underwater Gardens International (UGI), we recognise that marine microorganisms — including bacteria, phytoplankton, archaea and viruses — play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of our oceans. These microscopic organisms are responsible for essential functions such as organic matter decomposition, nutrient recycling, and primary production, contributing to over 50% of the Earth’s oxygen.
Through the microbial loop, they transform dissolved organic matter into biomass that sustains marine food chains, even in nutrient-poor waters. Moreover, they are key players in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and oxygen, helping regulate seawater chemistry and acidity — and by extension, playing a critical role in global climate regulation.
Marine forests, such as seagrass meadows, macroalgae forests and coral reefs, are powerful allies in these processes. They provide complex structural habitats that enhance microbial diversity and functionality.
At UGI, we develop regenerative solutions that integrate science, biotechnology and ecological restoration to accelerate the recovery of complex marine habitats. Our SER® smart substrates are specifically designed with the local microbial communities in mind, encouraging their development according to site-specific biodiversity to maximise the ecological functionality of our interventions.

OCEAN CITIZEN HAS BEEN AWARDED IN THE PROGRAM “HORIZON EUROPE”
The project OCEAN CITIZEN has been awarded with 11.4 million euros in the program “Horizon Europe”, led by the European Union Research and Innovation.
As partner of the consortium OCEAN CITIZEN, Underwater Gardens International (UGI) will have the opportunity to tightly collaborate with the other 21 international partners belonging to 7 different countries of the EU and Israel.
«Restoration acts promote biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration and accelerate coastal and offshore resilience.»
Yet, we still lack a program that combines conservation and restoration under a unified setting, as the involvement of local citizen, embracing socio-economic parameters into opportunities.
Thus, an advanced restoration program must conjoin ecological perspectives together with societal commitment and clear economic benefits for local communities.
Responding to the above, OCEAN CITIZEN proposal represent a novel restoration approach in which a profession of “gardeners of the sea” is created and endorsed, including detailed curriculum; the project targets the restoration of the most neglected marine biome, encompassing the various types of Marine Forest (MF) organisms (seagrasses, seaweeds, sponges, corals, gorgonians, etc.); transplantation of MF organisms the is performed on land, and in situ, from shallow, mesophotic to continental shelf areas (to 90-100 meters depth); a novel approach for C sequestering and sink the full involvement of citizens and local stakeholders with a complete business plan.
